Luxury Condo offered at $350000, 2 bed, 2 bath, garage
4901 Washington Blvd, St Louis MO 63108
You will raise your eyebrows in delight upon entering this luxury condominium in the Maison Lofts in the Central West End. The second floor units in the Maison Lofts have walls of windows that are the tops of the original rounded windows of the building and look like eyebrows. The great room of this unit has two of these in the great room which spew eastern sun and offer a great view for street watching. There is another window of northern light. This is a happy place.
The great room is a spacious expanse of wall across the northern half of the building. The great room measures 21 x 16 and is open to the kitchen dining area which is 17 x 11. The great room shares a gas fireplace with the kitchen/dining area. The 9′ ceilings add to the dramatic feel of this space. The floors are hardwood. The far northern corner has a wonderful built in entertainment center which was thoughtfully designed to include quite a bit of storage space.
The openness of the kitchen allows easy conversation with family and guests. It also has a great view of the street scenes when you are working at the island.
There is an abundance of space for the cook’s interaction with family and guests at the island or dining room table. Oh and that dining area gets the morning sun. A cup of coffee definitely tastes better with morning sun.
One of the current owners has a “sour dough” starter. (His bread baking day is Wednesday if you want to schedule your visit for an incredible aroma.) Anyway, he really likes this kitchen. It has good cabinet and counter space for amateur cooks.
Unit 2C in the Maison Lofts has a nice separate bedroom floor plan. The master bedroom suite is situated in the far northern section of the unit and has a northern facing window. The master bedroom has a very large walk-in closet. This room is 22 by 12 and can easily accommodate an at-home office or a seating area. The Master bath has a jacuzzi tub, double vanity and walk-in shower.
The second bedroom is currently being used as an at-home office and guest room. This room is also carpeted. It has a built-in industrial style desk/shelf. The powder room is next to the room affording privacy for long term guests. It is located away from the master and the activity of the public space.
A source of homey pleasure to the current owners is the laundry room. It accommodates a full size washer and dryer, has built in cabinets and still space for such things as small freezers or extra refrigerators, and “things”.
The building amenities include two car parking. The owners have an assigned space in the heated underground garage. They also have a storage area in this area. There is a second parking space (first come first serve) in the adjoining secured parking lot. This space is covered. Another pleasant amenity is the public patio which has seating and a gas grill. The building is five stories and includes an elevator at the northern end of the building. The front lobby has a secured key pad for admitting guests.
The seller is offering a Choice Home Warranty for Unit 2C at 4901 Washington Blvd.
Location
4901 Washington Blvd in the Maison Lofts is in the heart of the Central West End which is a century old neighborhood located conveniently in the central corridor of St Louis City. The Central West End is eclectic, cosmopolitan and “bohemian-chic”. It is pedestrian friendly and continues to be a favorite neighborhood for dining, entertainment and shopping. The area is bordered on the west by the award winning Forest Park which is only a 6 block walk from the 4901 Washington Blvd.
In addition to the many restaurants there are now 3 grocery stores. Groceries are about 500 steps away at Fields Foods on Euclid. Straub’s is a family owned St Louis grocery chain since 1901 and Whole Foods moved in recently.
Within a couple of blocks is The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis and the home of the World Chess Hall of Fame. The Chess Club is an educational organization giving private lessons but also promoting the educational value of chess through community outreach. People who have visited the beautiful mosaics of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis have compared it to the finest churches of Europe. Pictured below are some of the shops in the CWE.
In addition to the luxury of 4901 Washington Blvd, the location is what is a true drawing card for the quality of life here. The Central West End is the 13th most walkable neighborhood in St. Louis with a neighborhood Walk Score of 89. The property at 4901 Washington Blvd is on the north side of the CWE.
The commute by car to downtown is 13 minutes. Most errands are walkable. The Metrolink is 1 miles from the condo so taking in a Cardinal game can be decided on the spur of the moment. The Gateway Arch and the arch grounds are another St Louis attraction for the whole family easily accessible from the Central West End.
Coming Soon
Along Delmar Boulevard near Euclid Avenue, at least, there are signs the strong Central West End is beginning to lure investment. The 86-unit Lofts at Euclid, redeveloped by Cullinan Properties, is right at the border, albeit the south side of Delmar Boulevard. Across the street is the headquarters of Square co-founder Jim McKelvey’s tech training nonprofit LaunchCode.
Bryant plans to start buildout along Delmar, still dotted with vacant buildings and unused lots, with a $6.3 million rehab of the building at 4731 Delmar Boulevard into office and retail spaces. The building is preleased, Bryant said, and construction could start as soon as December. He aims to begin another $14 million office building around that time. Also planned is a $3.8 million rehab of the building at 4915 Delmar Boulevard into a performing arts center, a project Bryant said he hopes to begin next year.
Schools
There is not a shortage of high quality schools in the CWE. The Metro Academic and Classical High School, a St Louis Public School Magnet School, is located at 4015 Mcpherson Ave on the eastern edge of the CWE. Metro ranked number 1 in the state of Missouri in 2013. Also located in the CWE is the new St Louis the King Elementary School. This school includes grads kindergarten through grade 8 and is open to any child. It is located on the campus of the Basilica. Click here for a list of more schools located in the Central West End.
New City School is located at 5209 Waterman. It includes children from age three through 6th grade. Crossroads College Preparatory School at 500 DeBaliviere accommodates grades 7th through 12. St Louis University High School, a Jesuit high school for boys was founded in 1818. It educates young men from 9th through 12th grades. It is located at 4970 Oakland Avenue (Go Billikens!).
Parents and students in SLPS have options. There are 27 magnet schools within the district . They are also tuition free with a couple key differences:
- Magnet schools don’t have boundaries, and can attract students from any neighborhood in the city (hence the name). This generally results in a more diverse mix of social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds.
- Each magnet offers something different than a traditional public school, be it emphasis on certain subjects, a particular educational approach, or theme.
- Some magnets require students to meet certain academic, skill, behavior and/or attendance requirements.
- Advanced application is required and because of their popularity, spots are allocated by lottery.
There are 36 charter schools in St Louis which are also tuition-free schools but not a part of the SLPS. To learn more about charter schools go to: Charter School 101: The Basics.
