5 Haunted Houses in St Louis MO for a tour of the Paranormal on Halloween
1. The Darkness My teenage niece and her friend just had to visit The Darkness in Soulard when they visited us last fall. None of us would go with them and instead had a couple of drinks and watched the Cardinals in the playoffs. Her comment: “It was pretty scary. It was awesome to0 because the second part was 3D and neon. That was pretty cool!” The Darkness is ranked among the best haunted houses in the country by AOL, HauntWorld.com and USA Today. 2. The Lemp Mansion. The Lemp Mansion (3322 Demenil Pl, St. Louis, MO) is a historical house in Benton Park, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. It is also the site of three suicides by Lemp family members. The mansion is said to be haunted by members of the Lemp family. Link to events held year round at the Lemp Mansion.

3. The McPike Mansion, 2018 Alby Street, Alton, IL 62002-6814 This haunted house is open year round for tours and investigations with special Halloween events through November 2, 2013. This Grand Ole House is thought to still house many of the spirits that once lived here. Many Psychics and Mediums have felt the presence of what they believe to be McPike family, servants, as well as some of those who resided in and owned the house since 1936. It is not uncommon to find in photos of the mansion, orbs, balls of light, even figures appearing in the windows that were not seen by the human eye when the photo was taken.The Cellar has been a focal point of many energies felt in the mansion.
4. Jefferson Barracks. Grab a copy of David Goodwin’s Ghosts of Jefferson Barracks and then take a tour of this National Cemetery and grounds. Here’s an excerpt from his book:
One of the early legends documented for posterity by author Tony Fusco in his compilation of articles titled Historic Jefferson Barracks, involves the Powder Magazine. When America was thrust into the Second World War by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, armed soldiers at Jefferson Barracks were deployed at key positions around the post. One of these important locations, was the Powder Magazine. Armed sentries were frequently seen walking along the top of the stone wall surrounding the magazine or they would be observed patrolling around the exterior of the building.
Several of the soldiers who had pulled “guard mount” at the Powder Magazine, reported seeing a ghostly sentry who would appear every so often and challenge a bewildered guard at his post. It was believed that the ghost was the spirit of a murdered sentry who had been killed by a raiding party while they were trying to steal munitions from the Powder Magazine. This unsettled spirit, described as “having a bullet hole in his head, running red with blood” is said to have accosted his living counterparts because in death, he had been deprived of fulfilling his rightful duty.
An encounter with this ghost was said to be such a frightful experience, that several guards reportedly threw down their weapons and deserted their posts after seeing this shade. In one extreme instance, a soldier not only left his guard post, but also left the army as well because of his encounter with this unearthly sentry.
5. Crystal City Underground. 314-581-2582, 700 Crystal Avenue, Crystal City, MO 63019. Crystal City Underground is open year round for other events but for Halloween, Crystal City Underground is transformed into a setting of fun and bone chilling terror. The Haunted Maze is not for the faint of heart. Get prepared to scream as you traverse many different scenes and 666 yards of haunted hallways(if you don’t get lost) featuring live actors and effects, including the mesmerizing vortex tunnel. The haunted maze promises to bring the ultimate in terror like never before.
The Haunted Barge takes you floating on a spooky subterranean lake back into the deep dark recesses of the cave with macabre scenes and special effects. Spooky but suitable for all ages. Keep your heart pumping dancing the night away to the music of Rockin’ Roger. On Saturday October 26 they will have a Halloween Party featuring Penny Moon and Copper Creek. Wear your costumes.
