St Louis City Population Rankings in the U.S.
In 1876, the residents of St Louis City snubbed St Louis County residents by voting to be separate entities. This decision created an “us against them” attitude which is still around and has resulted in perception issues and governmental fragmentation for the city of St Louis. One of the most devastating misconceptions is a false impression of a high crime rate since the statistics currently used are only our urban area.
In city population rankings in the US, St Louis (population 319,294) is number 51, just below Wichita KS. By including St Louis County (population 998,954) we would rank in the top ten. We are all St Louisans. If you ask a St Louis County resident where they are from, they will tell you St Louis – not St Louis County.
Dr. Charles Schmitz and Mr. Bill Frisella have started a grassroots campaign to lay the foundation for the unification of St Louis City and County. Dr Schmitz and Mr Frisella are committed to change the perception of STL so that the population numbers accurately represent our region, our statistical numbers reflect our metropolitan community (i.e. crime for one) and our quality of life is based on all St Louisans and not just one small segment. Their proposals are outlined in their website, Stl -World Class City. They welcome St Louisans who would like to play a role in this venture. Personally, I think unification is long overdue. After all our amenities are spread throughout the region.
Washington Avenue in the City and The Delmar and Maplewood Loops in the County for entertainment.
World Class Theater at The Muny in the City and the Loretto Hilton in the County.
…and gooey butter cake and toasted ravioli are unique to our region.
